Snow in Auckland

On the 15th of August, Aucklanders experienced a very memorable event. Snow fell perhaps for the first time in 72 years due to the rare southerly polar blast. It fell on various parts of Auckland for a mere 10 – 15 minutes before melting away as sun reappears (or for some, as the rain starts to pour). It is unclear to me as to how this polar blast occurred. A simple Google Search did not help much so if anyone can shed some light, that would be great. Of course, the cold weather continues after the blast leaving Aucklanders at the freezing 4degrees temperature.

Here are some pictures from the snow blast – share yours with us !

A Malaysian student, Mohammad Asyraf Haziq, was one of the victims in the riots spreading across the cities in London. This youtube video captured the footage of a group who looks as if they were trying to help the bleeding Mohammad Asyraf at first but later on took advantage and went through his bag, snatching some item off his bag.

According to New Zealand Herald news , he lost his wallet and mobile phone and sustained a broken jaw and disjoint teeth. According to that report, he was attacked while walking home from buying food to break his Ramadhan fast.

To all Malaysian students in London – please stay safe.

New Zealand Film Festival 2011

That’s always up for debate. But one thing we can all agree on is that we all love going to the movies.

From the 14th of July – 8th of August, The NZ International Film Festival (NZFF) makes its first stop to Auckland.  I know what most of you would probably be thinking right now, why spend money when you can download these films off the internet. Now, unlike big blockbuster movies like Transformers , movies from the film festival usually have a lower profile, so the chances of finding a torrent which is legible or not viral porn is hard to come by.

With more than a 150 movies to choose from, I doubt you wouldn’t be able to find a movie or two that catch your eye. Movie genres range from architecture to animation to vampires. The big movies that are most likely to fill up quick would definitely be Melancholia (starring Spiderman’s Kirsten Dunst) and The Tree of Life (Starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn). Also, award winning movies fresh from the prestigious 2011 Cannes film festival such as The Kid with a Bike, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Las Acacias and etc will all be showing at the NZFF. List of Cannes films showing at the NZFF

If you still have trouble figuring out what movie to watch, the side bar of the NZFF website comes pretty handy in narrowing down your choices. For me, I’d definitely be going for one of the films from the “Incredibly Strange” list. I went to the NZFF last year to watch two films (one of them being “The Runaways) which were both showing at the Civic theatre. If you haven’t been to the Civic theatre, well now is your chance, it is pretty awesome inside, I would definitely recommend a visit there.

Tickets for students are $13, adults $16. For full ticketing prices, go to http://www.nzff.co.nz/auckland/ticket-prices . There are various methods to buy tickets, but cheapest would be to buy directly at the counter.

A word of advice is to get your tickets early, as there will be only as little as 2 or more showings for most movies. Also be aware, that there are various venues for each movie, so make sure you check where the movie will be showing, you don’t want to show up at Skycity theatre only to figure out your movie is actually at Newmarket’s Rialto cinemas. The holidays are ending quickly so grab your NZFF booklet at a location closest to you soon.

DV8 2011

Recently an estimated of 10,000 protestors took to the street in Kuala Lumpur marching towards Merdeka Stadium to demand for electoral reforms. Al-Jazeera news site reported  that police arrested more than 1600 protesters in what they call as “the biggest opposition-backed rally in years”.

The rally was illegal (you need police approval before you can have large gatherings) and police were trying to contain them by sealing off parts of the city, and firing tear gas and chemical-laced water in repeated attempts to disperse the crowds.

Some witness claims that the police asserted violence, charging protestors with batons and dragging them into the truck. However, this was disputed by Prime Minister Najib Razak in his statement  where he said that police handled the protestors professionally. He condemns street demonstrations, urging not to make them part of the culture of Malaysia. Whether it is violent or not, its for you to judge.

This is not the first time Bersih had a rally. They had one about three years ago. Below is the Al-Jazeera’s interview with Malaysian Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin on the allegations of violence during Bersih 1.0 three years ago. What is interesting is how the Minister handled himself in the interview, responding by saying “I congratulate your journalist behaving like an actor” which is a little below the standard of conduct expected from a Minister.

Interviewer: “Let me return to my former questions. Why is protest illegal?”

Minister: “We have elections in Malaysia. There’s no point for a protest”.

Then the question is: “Isn’t this protest for electoral reform? How do you protest through a process which is being disputed?”

To be fair however, if Malaysia’s elections was as bad as potrayed, opposition parties could not have gain 5 states in the last election. Also, most big rallies like this worldwide never ends in peaceful demonstration because of the emotional tense on both sides – protestors and police.

From the Bersih 2.0 site, one their main demands is to ensure cleaner electoral roll to wipe out “phantom voters” such as deceased persons and multiple people registered under non-existent addresses. Also, they demanded for postal votes which enables Malaysians living overseas to cast their votes (similar to US).

That may explain why Malaysians living in Auckland have also demonstrated outside Pak N Save in Royal Oak (NZ Herald report) in support of the Bersih 2.0 rally on Saturday. There were also reports of the same gathering occurring in other parts of Australia.

Malaysia is expected to call its 5-yearly election next year.

Like many other, Hell Pizza is one of the best pizzas in town (unless you consider Sal’s Pizza as the best).

Occasionally, Hell Pizza will have add-on deals such as free chicken tenders with orders above $27 and much more. To view these deals check out www.stealameal.co.nz

On Tuesdays, Hell Pizza offers free delivery on all online orders – sort of. Well, the reason I said it’s “sort of” is because the last time I tried, they keep coming up with “error – could not contact the store” so I couldn’t order online for the pizzas to be delivered even if I wanted to, but I went ahead with pickup anyways which surprisingly, works. One interesting deal that I found is that upon pick up of my pizza at Hell Pizza on Quay Street, Parnell (same row of shops as KFC on Quay Street) they will give you a voucher so that you can receive free delivery on any days, which is better cause you’ll avoid the rush of hungry people wanting their pizzas on Tuesdays.

Hell's Pizza

This Sunday, 10th July 2011, Hell is offering pizzas for $13 if you order online. Just key in the code SFO 666 upon paying to receive this offer.

Don’t know what to order? Try from their Gourmet Pizza ranges. Pandemonium (chicken, camembert and cranberry sauce) or Serpent (smoked salmon with free add-on avacado) are two pizzas that are always on my “safe list”. Try their cajun wedges for extras or if you are more adventurous, have a go at their dessert pizzas.
