Bersatu Games Otago 2011

Bersatu Games is about to start this 1st July 2011. This year’s Bersatu Games is being held in Dunedin, Otago and according to the Otago’s Malaysian Student Association (OMSA) ‘s website, Bersatu Games 2011 is well underway.

If you are looking for the schedule for Bersatu Games, here it goes (courtesy of OMSA). Click here to view.

All the best to UMSA team, we will try to bring you some live updates on how our team are doing through our twitter streams and daily summary here on our site.

“Sports for unity”.

So Wimbledon is going on, and top players like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are head on. Surprises might occur and who knows an underdog may even take them all out. For the past few matches, one would say the frustration seeing Nadal loose to Djokovic or that Federer lost to Nadal after defeating Djokovic in the previous French Open is at its height.

If you don’t have cable tv, don’t worry. Channel one (TVNZ 1) is airing Wimbledon live this week typically from 12am midnight. So catch your dose of world class tennis (or even the fun of watching the linesmen sweat in what it seems like a ridiculous uniform for a hot summer time) this holiday. Unwind with a cup of hot chocolate or just plain awesome milk tea. Or stream online, if that is your means.

For Urzila Carlson at 32, her journey into the comedy scene could be in her words described as unexpected and accidental. Initially a dare from friends to perform at an Open Mic night at Raw Quest, Urzila has since gone into great comedic success, attracting the attention of fans to her South African accent and raw style humour. The edge comedian has also netted many accolades and awards in her short time on the NZ Comedy scene.

Carlson won ‘Best Newcomer Award’ in 2008 and December 2010, she was the winner of the ‘Best Female Comedian’ in the NZ Comedy Guild Awards. “It was a massive surprise, says Carlson, I was so in the same league with everybody that I look up to”. Carlson is also a nominee for this year’s Billy T Awards.

Her material is inspired by events that have happened in her life. Some of her content needs to be censored depending on the crowd. If there are old people in the crowd I won’t swear as much, or young people I won’t swear at all. If they’re really drunk I’ll stick to safe subjects and won’t talk about politics or religion”.

Her greatest ambition is to one day meet and open for Billy Connelly, but she is a huge fan of Brian Tamaki. “I like his ability to pull a crowd”. Carlson is fond of new Zealand audiences. Although she has only performed in New Zealand and Australia, Carlson thinks New Zealand audiences are forgiving. “They are so good; they are very accepting and almost extremely polite. They laugh at anything, to a point. If your crap through, your crap”.

Her advice for up and coming comedians is “to stay calm and talk about stuff you find funny”. Her new show “The Truth According to Urzila Carlson” took a couple of months to write. “It’s about lying or the truth, however you choose to hear it”.

Urzila Carlson performed at the recent New Zealand Comedy Festival 2011.

As students and even working at the office, sitting can be a dangerous activity. We sit in class, we sit for hours in the labs or in front of our desk, we sit to eat three meals a day, we sit to watch tv. We basically sit for almost anything we do. Recent news has articulated the dangers of sitting for a long period of time, even when you exercise regularly. Some say that if you sit for most of the day, you are 54% more likely to get a heart attack.

There is a site, “Stand or Die” that clocks your standing hours and maps it to tell you whether you have stood enough for a day. Pretty neat huh?

Have you sit for a long time with a particular posture and find that your body starts to ache and you can’t sleep well because your back is stiff? “Sit up straight” does not mean that you should sit up at right angle (90 degrees). When sitting you should not bend forward but have yourself lay back slightly. Make sure that your eyes matches directly to the height of your screen that you’re looking at. Also, do some stretches from time to time. Here are some helpful stretches that will help in your shoulder ache as a result of sitting to long .

Also, besides sitting down for too long, staring at the screen or reading for a long period can lead to short sightedness. From a visit to the optometrist, I’ve been told that the phrase “look at green things, its good for your eyes” exists not particularly because green colour is good for our eyes, but when we look at green things, we are looking at a further distance – which is good.

So, take time out to look far, stand up and stretch. Stay healthy.

Now that you have time in your hand during the semester break, try travelling around to places outside of the city to eat.

There is so much out there to be explored out there (and right here in the city) and given that holidays are long and at times boring, catching up with your friends for some good food may seem a good idea. This is of course, unless you’re going back home to Malaysia to have the greatest feast *is jealous*.

A trip to Pakuranga Night Market

- courtesy of umsa committee

When it comes to food, there are many choices at the Pakuranga Night Market; Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, American, Italian, Russian…… and last but not least: MALAYSIAN cuisines.

Once you enter the night market, you will experience that familiar ‘pasar malam’ atmosphere and see stalls with flags or symbols that show the type of food they are offering.

There are actually two Malaysian stalls at the market; one specialises in soup noodles such as curry laksa and fish ball noodle soup. The other stall sells satay and chinese lobak kuih among others.

You can find them quite easily as both stalls are located at the end of the two corners. For those homesick or pasar-malam-sick students, you now have an opportunity to enjoy a moment of New Zealand pasar malam here. If you live in the city and wish to take a bus to Pakuranga, just catch one of these buses at the Symonds St bus stops:  buses 50, 51, 680 or 681. Do bring some cash with you as not all stalls have eftpos machines.

Chicken Fried Rice

Alright, so fried rice is very common. But Flying Horse’s fried rice and takeaways are to die for. At least to me since I’m willing to drive out 20 minutes to Takapuna just to get one.

They serve other typical Chinese takeaway stuff of which my next favourite is Egg Fu Yong. So why is this Chicken Fried Rice so awesome? I have no idea. When asked, the person who introduced this to me said “its because they use sunflower oil to cook them”. I don’t know to what extend this is true, but what I do know is that they are committed in using polyUNsaturated oil in cooking your stuff so you know it is as healthy as it can get.

There are two branches in Auckland, but Birkenhead branch’s rice tends to be on the drier side compared to Takapuna’s moist, rich in flavour fried rice. The quantity that they give for an $11.50 box can definitely fit four bowls of normal rice scooping.

Opens 7 days until 11pm. Accepts credit card and phone orders. Also while you’re in the vicinity of the Takapuna’s branch, check out some other places to eat right around the corner!

Malaysian Halal Indian Food

Technically, they are more Malaysian then they are Indian. This is because the owner is from Malaysia and has lived in New Zealand for more than 10 years. Named after their daughter, I feel Santhiya doesn’t get enough credit for the food they serve although they have been one of the major caterers for events a few years back.

Located on the far end of Dominion Road, they serve awesome curry (even fish curry), papadom and much more that will remind you of home. At a relatively quiet location, Santhiya is famous around its community. I know this because when I went there to dine, I see many families and people who live around that area coming in to “tapau” food. Given that these customers didn’t even need to explicitly tell their orders, I know that they have been here many times for such relationship to be formed.

I guess what made the experience sweeter for me is that I was doing some club’s official business that time, and the officer in charge shouted us dinner.

Opens Tuesday to Sunday, 11.30am – 9pm @ 1270 Dominion Road, Mt Roskill.

Murder Burgers

The trend now on burgers are moving towards gourmet burgers. Given the popularity of Burger Fuel, its safe to say that they are truly different from our ordinary burgers from McDonalds or BurgerKing. This below discusses of another great gourmet burger place.

- courtesy of umsa committee

You are hungry. No, wait, you are very, very hungry and you want your food now. You have had enough of McDonalds, Wendy’s and Domino’s for that instant quick fix. You want something different; something bigger, juicier, fresher and softer. Your stomach is calling out to you. You know you need something satisfying. Where would you go?

If that sounds like you, drop by Murder Burger. Located in the heart of Ponsonby, it serves one of the best burgers in Auckland. Enter the shop and you know you are in the hands of the best burger diners ever. Its eclectic, quirky and definitely unique interior tells you that you are in for the most creative menu ever.

There is no wrong in choosing its burger. The buns are soft, the patties are juicy, the veggies are fresh and the here comes the best part; the portion is huge! Girls, do bring your girlfriends along to share…  Murder Burger also offers Monkey Fist, which is the smaller version of its usual burger.
If unsure, The Standard will be your safest bet. With beef, cheese, egg and beetroot, this is for all who are Kiwi at heart.

If you are feeling adventurous, try the Double Beef & Wild Board Bacon. At $14.90, you would be coming back for more. Remember the soft buns, the juicy patties, the fresh veggies? Now add in the crispiest bacon. Absolutely divine.

The prices are reasonable and range from $7.90 to $16.50.

Monday to Thursday, Sunday: 1100am to 1000pm
Friday to Saturday: 1100am to 1100pm
@ 128 Ponsonby Road

Giapo Gelato Ice Cream

Last but not light, we have to finish up with the best dessert located right at the heart of the city. Giapo. Some of you might be familiar with it, some of you not. One thing definitely that Giapo did was stick to its promise of the love of food. They use organic stuff, and the type of milk that is good for you. They go to the extend of buying of small growers like you and me to ensure that it is organic. They come up with odd flavours from Saffron during the Diwali Festival to seaweed flavour (did I just hear a “yuck” from you?) They support causes that you are passionate about. They fundraise for Christchurch, sending water, money and all sorts.

- courtesy of umsa committee

When I first walked along Queen St, I didn’t really give the crowded little purple cafe a second glance. But it has been a bit of a trend and my friends in Auckland keep talking about it. What’s so great about gelato? Well, after having some myself, I can certainly see why. It’s all about using organic ingredients and sharing their passion for gelato by giving you awesome flavours and fantastic service. Giapo offers nearly two dozen different gelatos and ice creams. I remember there were Bananisnap, Boys n Berries, Macadamia, Dark chocolate and the list goes on and on. Not to forget; Tiramisu and Strawberry with Balsamic Vinegar (very unique!) I looked at the prices and cringed a little at first, but then paid in the name of Organic Gelato. To my surprise, the cone was huge – too large to finish, but certainly worth the price!

27/3/2011

Being a part of UMSA, definitely has it’s perks. Apart from being able to make new friends and practising your lah, mah, cheh with people of your kind, you get to participate in outside activities, be paid for it and take pictures with notable  political figures such as Auckland’s mayor, Len Brown.

This was the case for some of the folks of UMSA and UMNO at the Auckland Cultural festival. They were hired to promote ” Malaysia kitchen”, a company that seeks to introduce malaysian cuisine to people of NZ, Australia and the world by bringing together malaysian restraunts around the country.

http://www.malaysiakitchen.co.nz

The website is a good place to go if you’re just craving some good authentic malaysian food other than the one you go to 2-3 times a week which is less than 300m from your apartment building. (you know who you people are haha) .Not only that, it has articles, recipes, promotions about malaysian food in nz’s culinary scene.

Anyway, back to the Auckland cultural festival. There were heaps of other stalls set up by other races of the world. From danish to indian, there were 30 others from what I was told. food galore.

There were performances throughout the day, which also  included the peformance by the umsa/umno crew,a traditional malay and bamboo dance to entertain the crowd.the highlight of the day was definitely when Len Brown showed up for a picture with the crew plus the free food given out by the malaysian kitchen staff.

I don’t know about you, but I know what I’m having for dinner tonight.

Give yourself a break, grab yourself a great luxury deal to do the things you won’t normally do. Make living in Auckland and traveling cheap!

Grab a great deal

Over the past two years, deal sites have been sprouting in New Zealand offering great savings on restaurants, acommodations, shopping, car servicing, fashion, hair styling, massages and so much more! If you are not already one of those people who waits for 12am to see new deals every day, then this might seem strange and dodgy because these sites are offering 40 to 90% savings. How could this be possible?

Well, the basic concept is “buying together, saving together”. Kicked off by Groupon (a deal site based in US and now worldwide), it cashes in on the concept that if we gather our collective power via social network then we can leverage this power to command deals/savings from the seller. Typically, there will be an amount (called tipping point: the point where a cause reaches the mass) that has to be bought before the deal is on.

This is so hugely popular that Google has offered Groupon a USD$6 billion buyout (which Groupon declined in favour of IPO).  As economics would predict, because this concept is so easy to copy, there are many other sites that used this concept and apply it to New Zealand. Some sites offer better deals than others. Since most deal providers try to achieve at least 40% off the products/services they are offering to customers and these providers takes a 20% to 30% cut (commission) off the price,  merchants/businesses rarely make much of out of it (unless of course their cost is like way low and makes you wonder why were you paying a 200% markup in the first place), but it is good advertising for most of them and especially good to build their brands to the mass.

(If you already know of these sites, why not read some of our tips on buying online here?)

Grabone

By far, one of the best deal sites in New Zealand. This is jointly owned by APN Media which also owns New Zealand Herald. Has other sub sites like GrabOne Tee (shirts from Mr Vintage), GrabOne Bottle (wine deals), and newly introduced GrabOne Escape (travel & accommodation deals).

TreatMe

A branch from TradeMe which came in not too long ago. Deal quality ranges.

Groupy

Owned by Yellow pages.

Spreets

A unique feature is that it offers second chance deal (meaning, giving you a second chance to buy expired deals).

1-dayout

A branch of 1-day, a popular one day 3 deals site. Check that out too.

DailyDo

Quality of deals can differ however, good to have a look once in a while.

Cudo

Quality of deals can differ. Popular with deals of getaway/accommodation.

Yazoom

When they have good deals, they are really good. Advertises on tv a lot if you do watch tv during late night.

Dealmate

Relatively new, not so popular but still worth a look.

Living Social

Very popular in the US but they are struggling to get a consistent amount of deals in New Zealand. The site here: LivingSocial

Groupon.co.nz

The source of inspiration for all these deal concepts based in US. Just started in New Zealand.

Grabaseat.co.nz

Air New Zealand deal sites to buy cheap airfares (usually domestic but sometimes international)

GrabANight.co.nz

By Millenium hotels featuring hotel deals from their branches.

SnatchADeal.co.nz

Deals on cosmetics, books and more.

BUYING STUFF DEAL SITES:

1-day.co.nz

Very very popular site for 3 deals every day. Love to grab some 60 AA batteries for $20 when they have it.

GameADay.co.nz

One game offering a day – PS3, PSP, Nintendo Wii, DS, Xbox

DealADay.co.nz

Part of Game-a-day and offers one item at a cheap price a day.

OneDollar.co.nz

Offer stuff for $1 and some others at a low price (typically less than $10). However, be careful before you buy of the shipping cost!

MightyApe.co.nz

Technically, MightyApe is an online book/cd/dvd/game store. However, everyday they offer discount on 3 items of theirs and typically they are pretty good.

Firstin.co.nz

Offers tech products at a cheap price including laptops, desktops, cameras, headphones (and spy pens several times – yes, SPY pens). Be careful that some of the computers and devices are manufacture recertified – that’s why they can be sold cheap. This will be noted under the description so you’ll be able to review it before buying. If you have some knowledge about computers and understand the fundamentals of the term “manufacture recertified”, this can be a great site to get deals on tech products.

OffTheBack.co.nz

Similar to 1-day deals, sells variety of things. Once had 4 Zumba dvd sets for $30, cadbury brunch bars.

3deals.co.nz

Featuring 3 deals like books, jackets, cosmetics and more

Trademe.co.nz

The sellers of TradeMe come together to offer 3 deals at a low price in the middle section of their home page. Usually deals aren’t very attractive but occassional one or two that are of interest.

If these sites are just too much for you to check in one day, try Deal Shrimp which display feeds from different deal sites in one place OR sign up for email notification on those deal sites / follow them on Twitter or Facebook.

SOME TIPS ON GETTING GREAT DEALS

  1. If you see a good deal. Be fast. Decide in the first 10 minutes whether it is worth it. Good deals never last, it sells out fast.
  2. Resist the temptation to click “buy now” before reading. Big discounts like 70% can fool you if you don’t know the current market price. The best way is to Google up similar products and also compare the real price that other deal sites have offer. If its more expensive than what other deal sites can do it for, probably it is worth a wait. Real price counts!
  3. Read the fineprints. Typically, there will be a valid date, a location specification, some form of terms and conditions. If unsure, ask using the discussion option.
  4. NEVER! let the site save your credit card details. Although those sites may suggest you to do so to make buying more convenient, most sites aren’t that “hacked proof” no matter how much they boast about the security. You can uncheck the option under your profile if you accidentally allowed it when you buy.
  5. Don’t fall for any new deal sites. Observe first their progress before jumping onboard.
  6. If you are planning on travelling somewhere (New Zealand or Australia), keep a lookout for restaurant, activities and accommodation deals at least 3 months before. If you can catch some of those good deals, you might be travelling in luxury and enjoying all the activities at the same price that you would otherwise pay for a stingy trip.
  7. Follow the businesses you like on Facebook or Twitter. They often do giveaways or special discounts that would be better than those deal sites.
  8. Finally, control your spending. Buying may get out of hand when huge discounts are thrown at you. Allocate the number of deals you would buy a month and stick to it.

In Malaysia, I remember that the concept of getting $29 for a $30 prepay Maxis card is not foreign. Whats better is to see the shops competing for your business by offering the same or lower. It is good value for money for us consumers in light of the insane calling prices by the telcos. 89c per minute for a Vodafone mobile to other mobiles? *faints*

The new convenience store opened on Symonds Street (beside Pita Pit on Symonds, where the medical lab used to be) called City Star Convenience store is offering $20 Vodafone prepay cards for only $19 and a 20% discount on calling cards such as EasyCall, Yabba, Superbuzz and much more. That means, technically, you get 20% more calling time and this is even better than the 10% extra that the calling card providers offer if you top up with them directly.

So what about those of you who are not on Vodafone? All is not lost. UMSA’s sponsor , Midcity Lotto & Newsagent offers similar discounts to 2Degrees and Telecom reload. Check our sponsor page for address details.

No additional surcharge calling from Vodafone mobiles

Also, with the Superbuzz calling card, you can call from Vodafone mobile without additional surcharge of calling from a mobile. This is convenient if you’re travelling or do not want to pay additional for a landline number. As far as I know, only Yabba calling card offers similar service to Telecom mobile customers.

On 19th March 2011, in light of the Christchurch Earthquake and Japan’s tsunami/earthquake, The Star has published an article under the Survival Smarts section on steps to take cover if these events were to occur. Below are some steps listed in the article.

If you are indoors:

  1. If there’s a table near you, take cover under a study table or desk that will provide protection and breathing space. (This article did not mention what it means by “protection” and “breathing space” but I presume it implies that the desk must be quite hard so that it will not shatter when heavy things fall on it and the desk must be wide enough to fit your body + extra so that the debris will  fall further from you to let you breath ?)
  2. If there’s no table near you, cover your face and head with your arms (not the palm of your hands, the whole arms! gosh, this is not the time to cover your face and cry, its real disaster) and crouch in an inside corner of the building (walls against walls I imagine, not near windows?).
  3. A lower floor or a cellar is safer as the upper floor could come crashing down with you on it (see, doesn’t mean higher is better).
  4. Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls and anything that could fall such as lighting fixtures or furnitures (definitely not where you keep your pots and pans)
  5. Stay in bed if you’re there when earthquake strikes. Hold on, protect your head (not face or you’ll suffocate before it even strikes) with a pillow. Unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall, move to the nearest safe place.
  6. Use a doorway for shelter only if its close by and if you know its strongly supported.
  7. Stay inside until shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Most injuries occur when people are hit by falling objects while rushing in and out of buildings.
  8. In shop, keep away from large displays of goods that could come crashing down.
  9. In high rise building, stay put. Don’t go into lift or take staircase. Get under the desk.

If you are outdoors:

  1. Remain outdoors. Don’t try to run.
  2. Move away from buildings, streetlights and utility wires (I find this hard if you’re living in the city)
  3. Don’t go underground or into a tunnel where you could be trapped by blockage or collapse.
  4. On a hillside, its safe to get to the top as the slops are liable to landslide

If you are in a car:

  1. Stop and stay in vehicle. Avoid stopping near buildings, trees, overpasses and utility wires.
  2. Crouch below seat level where you will be further protected (under your wheel, glove compartment, etc)
  3. Proceed cautiously once quake has stop.

If you are trapped under debris:

  1. Don’t light up a match (because that consumes your O2), move about or kick up dust.
  2. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing
  3. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Shout only as a last resort because shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amount of dust.

If its a tsunami:

  1. RUN. for your life
  2. Head uphill or inland.

And these are some of my tips that I’ve discovered after following the news of rescue missions in Christchurch.

  1. Keep your mobile with you. I find that rescuers were guided a lot to the people trapped in debris because they could contact them using their mobiles.
  2. Conserve the battery of your mobile –  be it keep it on silent, don’t call but text. Rescue missions can take a long time and the most critical time is when they are closing in on you.
  3. Once the quake stops, contact someone or 111 for emergency. (you can text to 111 too because they now have those service for Deaf and hearing impaired people).

Most important of all, if you have not already seen it on tv:

  1. Plan, practice and communicate emergency plans to your family / friends .
  2. Make sure you have canned food and water.
  3. Make sure you know where you should meet in event of emergency. Eg. if earthquake happens, lets meet near the museum at Auckland Domain.
  4. Make sure you know all the emergency numbers.

Keep safe everyone!

Android Robot eating the Apple

nom nom nom nom

Reports lately that Android phone’s market share of smartphones is slowly catching up with Apple’s iPhone (and some say its’ growth burst is beating Apple’s), reports from global research agency Millward Brown has found that Apple’s brand is still the most valuable at $153 bil, moving up two spots from previous year to snatch Google’s no. 1 position. Google is  now in second place  at $111 bil with Microsoft in fifth at $78 bil.

Whats surprising to me is to see brands that I’ve never heard before, such as China Mobile at $57 bil and ICBC (Chinese bank) at $44 bil. Perhaps thats because I am living at the ends of the earth.

The interesting progress to see what would be the impact of the release of Chrome OS, a cloud (think of it as online based) operating system service by Google this year on Google’s brand next year. Or will Apple counter that with an iPhone 5 release? (no, I am not hinting it will be released anytime soon because I do not know myself). On the side note, see how Facebook is creeping in with a 246% increase in their brand value?

Hello and a warm welcome to all to the new interface, umsanz v2.0 . It uses the same powerful technology as before (WordPress) but this time we were able to take advantage of a lot of new features rolled out in WordPress 3.x as well as the advancement in HTML 5, CSS 3 and just the general development from designers in the content presentation area.

Wordpress

I think I have spoken enough of what UMSA’s website was, has been and will continue to be in the “about website” page. One thing I would like to highlight is our effort to move away from just purely UMSA activities site to an information site that will be UMSA readers’ weekly (or daily) feed. We have divided the site into different sections to achieve this aim – From the Team, UMSA Events, Living in Auckland, Malaysia & The World, Your Corner, Gallery, Video. We hope that each section will bring something intriguing to you personally and encourage you to give feedbacks to us regarding our contents by commenting on the post with your opinions. Let us hear your voice.

We will strive to maintain these contents, however, we would like to urge you to contribute as well. Write to us – it can be a letter to the creative team, it can be contributing an article, designs, ideas. Your contribution is a great motivator for us towards the effort of making umsanz.com extraordinary. Day Out at Western Springs

Spend day out away from the city
Spend day out away from the city – Devonport 2008

Lets take a moment away from the bustling city life to chill out, relax and enjoy the calm atmosphere of Western Springs Park. Although it may not be as hilly (as the picture which was Devonport), Western Springs park has a lake well known for its population of eel (think unagi) and other birds like Pukeko (if you’re saying pu-what, then you should really be coming), swans and ducks. If you have any expired bread (not rotten ones), feel free to bring along to feed them.

Its YOUR day out, so you can bring anything you want – guitar, football, volleyball, rugby, kites, frisbee, a novel, remote controlled planes….. or if you want, your assignments, textbook or notes. Who knows nature might inspire your learning.

We will be taking the bus from Symonds Street that will cost $3.40 one way ($6.80 return). If it rains, turn up at our meeting place anyway because we have a backup plan :-)   Snacks will be provided by us.

Below are the details :

Date: 26th March 2011

Time: 2pm – 5.30pm

Place: Western Springs Park

Meeting Place: Auckland Uni’s Quad

Cost: bring $6.80 for bus fare

Any questions, please direct them to our social officer (including vegetarian options for snacks) at socialofficer@umsanz.com

The first three days of tryouts for Bersatu will be held in the next few weeks. A reminder that Bersatu Games 2011 will be held in Dunedin, Otago during the semester break from 1st July – 5th July 2011. For those who doesn’t know what is Bersatu Games, it is similar to a mini-olympic games where all Malaysian student clubs all around New Zealand come together in one city to compete in sports. The main aim of Bersatu Games is to encourage unity (as the name suggest) through sports. It is a great time to get to know other members of other club and to really bond through competitive sports.
